Amid the flood of memes created in response to Donald Trump’s bizarre claim about dogs and cats being eaten in Springfield, Hank Azaria may have delivered the best one yet.
If you haven’t been following the news this past week, Trump made the unusual statement during a presidential debate against Kamala Harris on Tuesday (September 10). He claimed that pets were being eaten in Springfield—though he was referring to the city in Ohio, not the fictional Springfield from The Simpsons.
The 78-year-old Republican candidate said at the debate: “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs… they’re eating the cats… they’re eating the pets of the people that live there.” He was referring to an online rumor about Haitian immigrants abducting and eating pets, a claim dismissed by Springfield Police as baseless. The rumor originated from a dubious source—a “neighbor’s daughter’s friend”—and had no evidence to support it.
Despite the lack of credibility, Trump’s remarks sparked a wave of humorous posts online, especially Simpsons-themed memes, which quickly went viral. But the standout moment came from Hank Azaria, the voice actor behind Chief Wiggum on The Simpsons.
Azaria uploaded a video to Twitter, portraying Chief Wiggum responding to a fictional 911 call. In the hilarious clip, Wiggum says: “Springfield Police Chief Clancy Wiggum speaking, how can I help you? People are eating dogs? What do you mean like hot dogs? Oh, cats too? Are they good?”
The video, which has been viewed over six million times, set off even more meme-making, with fans joining in on the fun. One user posted a Simpsons meme of dogs swimming in gravy, while another shared the iconic “OLD MAN YELLS AT CLOUD” image, reimagined with Trump’s quote: “IN SPRINGFIELD, THEY’RE EATING THE DOGS. THEY’RE EATING THE CATS. THEY’RE EATING THE PETS.”
And the memes just keep coming!
