In the early hours of Sunday, September 1, in Paderno Dugnano, a town north of Milan, Italy, a 17-year-old boy is believed to have entered his younger brother’s room armed with a knife. The 12-year-old was stabbed 10 times, his screams waking their parents.
Unaware that their eldest son was the attacker, father Fabio Chiarioni heroically called on him to help. It was at this moment, authorities believe, the teen launched a fatal attack on both parents.
The son then called emergency services, initially claiming he had killed his father in self-defense and that his father was responsible for the deaths of his mother and brother. When police arrived, the boy was outside his home, covered in blood, holding a knife, which he dropped when officers approached.
During initial questioning, the teen maintained that his father had killed his family. However, after hours of interrogation, his story unraveled as investigators found no injuries consistent with a struggle.
The boy reportedly confessed, stating, “There is no real reason why I killed them. I felt like a foreign body in my family, oppressed. I thought that by killing them all, I would free myself from this discomfort.” He added that the murders took place on his father’s 51st birthday.
Paderno Dugnano’s mayor, Anna Varisco, described the family as normal and serene, with no history of problems. A parent of the alleged killer’s classmate expressed shock, saying, “They were a fantastic, happy family. It’s impossible to understand what could have happened.
