A tourist in Indonesia tragically died, and three others were injured after a popular glass-bottom bridge collapsed.
On Wednesday, October 25, 11 tourists from Cilacap, Central Java, were crossing the Geong Bridge in the Limpakuwus Pine Forest. The bridge, suspended 10 meters high and supported by two large golden hands, provided a scenic view of the forest. However, as the group admired the landscape, several glass panels began to break beneath them.
Disturbing footage shared on social media shows one visitor desperately trying to climb back onto the bridge, while two others lay motionless on the ground below. Bystanders rushed to assist, pulling the fallen tourists back to safety and escorting them off the bridge.
According to Singaporean outlet The Straits Times, locals heard the sound of breaking glass at around 10 a.m. Shortly after, Banyumas City Police Chief Edy Suranta Sitepu confirmed that one of the tourists had succumbed to their injuries. Three others sustained minor injuries in the fall.
The Jakarta Post reported that Ekop Purnomo, chairman of the Limpakuwus Pine Forest Cooperative, had raised concerns about the bridge’s safety months earlier. After receiving complaints on social media, Purnomo attempted to schedule a safety review with the bridge’s management in April. However, the manager sent a representative instead, and no formal discussion took place.
Following the incident, local authorities requested the closure of Limpakuwus Pine Forest for further investigation, which began on Thursday, October 26.
